ZINK Imaging, Inc. and Lite-On Technology Corp. have announced a strategic partnership, already underway, for the design, commercialization and marketing of a range of ZINK-enabled ink-free digital printing products, the two companies said at the CES show here.

Zero Ink is one of the latest technologies to emerge in the printing industry. The idea is similar to thermal printing; it centers on special photo paper that is coated with Amorphochromic dye crystals that react to the heat from the printer and change color.

In 2005, a group of former Polaroid employees formed Zink (short for “zero ink”) Imaging, with Herchen as chief technology officer. They converted a Konica Minolta paper factory to make paper embedded with the heat-activated dyes and recruited Alps Electric to build the printer.
